In 1907, the most noteworthy of which was his work at the International Balloon Races at St. Louis, Missouri in October where he won several prizes. There on October 22nd Dixon left the Balloon Park, pedaled over the city, crossed the Mississippi River and landed at Venice, Illinois, a distance of several miles. Mrs. Dixon advertised in the aviation magazines: "Exhibition dates being accepted for Cromwell Dixon, Jr., the world's youngest inventor and aeronaut". These activities continued, however it is recorded that they could have secured considerably more business with better exhibition promotion management. Reportedly this airship was destroyed by fire in 1908, then the Dixons started a new 45 foot ship which was powered by a Curtis single cylinder motorcycle engine. With this new craft Dixon started his exhibition season in May, 1909 at Indianapolis, Indiana where his flights were well received for some time. In July he started flying at Lakeside Park, Dayton, Ohio, then later that fall at Cincinnati, Ohio at Latonia Race Track. Knabenshue and Beachey were also flying there with their airships. From June 28th to July 5th, 1910 Dixon and Fred Owens both flew airships at an air meet in Montreal, Canada. At that time Knabenshue was Exhibition Manager for the Wright Brothers and he was there with aviators Brookins, Jhonstone and La Chappelle. Also flying monoplanes, one with a 35 H.P. Anzani engine, the other with 50 Gnome. At the event Dixon made a number of fine airship flights but had the misfortune to lose his craft when it got free from the moorings while unattended, ascended to a high altitude and burst. Dixon was very discouraged but then became interested in learning to fly. Again Mrs. Dixon approached Knabenshue about this but he advised he has no openings and could not take him on. After being turned down by Knabenshue the Dixons approached deLesseps who, after some persuasion, allowed Dixon to try a hop in the 25 Anzani Bleriot. Dixon had never had a ride in aeroplane, much less ever tried to fly one, but he climbed in and took off on what was described as probably the world's most sensational, hair raising first flight ever made.
