In 1913 Engel was flying at Cleveland and Akron, Ohio in July, and on the 31st was at Ashtabula, Ohio. He was then a contestant at the 1913 Perry Centennial Celebration at Buffalo, New York September 1st to 7th, flying with Beckwith Havens, Glenn Martin and William S. Luckey. On November 1st he began a one-week engagement at Lake Chatauqua, Jamestown, New York and there carried passengers.
 
On May 30th, 1914, Engel was back at Jamestown where he contracted to fly for the Celoran Amusement Company for the summer resort season at Lake Chatauqua and also arranged to carry mail daily from Jamestown to Mayville until September 7th.
 
In July, 1915 Engel became a full time instructor at the Buffalo Cutiss School training Naval officers. Later he was transferred to the Newport News Virginia Curtiss School where he remained until September 1st when he left on an assignment to Spain for the Curtiss Company. He sailed on the Steamship ROMA with Captain Juan Vinegra of the Spanish Army to deliver and conduct acceptance tests of twenty Curtiss planes. Engle was to also instruct Spanish officers at a flying field near Madrid. While there Engel became a close friend of King Alfonso. On September 8th, 1915 Engel was elected a member of the Aero Club of America.
 
After returning to the United States Engel was in charge of the construction of the large 15-ton Model "T" Curtiss flying boat at the Buffalo plant.
 
There is evidence that Engel remained with the Curtiss Company through 1916 then took over a factory building of the Niles Car and Manufacturing Company, Niles, Ohio where he began to build flying boats. While thus engaged he organized the Engel Aircraft Company there in August 1917, became Vice-President and Production Manager of the firm, and they proposed to assist in the World War I aircraft emergency.
 
Their first order was for Curtiss JENNIE sub-assemblies and spare parts. After this order they were given contract for similar DH material. In addition,
