port, Connecticut and while there he made the first passenger carrying flight across Long Island Sound to Fort Jefferson, Long Island and re-turn, carrying John Dibert. There also on June 1st he obtained his F.A.I. Pilot License, No. 127, flying a Curtiss Hydro. 
   On July 4th Havens flew an exhibition date at Oswego, New York with John Towers and Cecil Peoli, and here he began flying a headless type plane without front elevator. Following this he returned to Hammondsport where he assisted in the initial flight tests of the first Curtiss Flying Boat. That month he also filled an exhibition date at Peoria, Illinois, flying a Hydro, where he experienced a minor smashup when he was caught in a severe storm. Through late July and the first days of August he was flying at Ontario Beach, Rochester, New York. From August 10th through the 19th Havens made daily flights with a Curtiss model D single-seater biplane in conjunction with the Army National Guard maneuvers in Con-necticut and New York under the direction of Major Samuel Reber, U.S.A. Lts. Milling, Beck and others also made flights during these military exercises. 
   From September 9th through the 16th he made daily flights at the New York State Fair, Syracuse, New York along with Walter Johnson, Charles Niles and W.B. Hemstrought. Following the Havens was a [[strikethrough]] H [[/strikethrough]]hydro contest-ant at the 1912 Chicago Meet at Grant Park, where he made a wonderful showing, entering eleven events and placing second in total earnings. While in Chicago he also did some flying for the movies. For the re-mainder of the 1912 flying season Havens was at Hammondsport, instructing and doing test work. At that time Curtiss was developing his first re-tractable landing gear arrangement on a flying boat and Havens assisted with these tests. Operations closed odwn there during late November and Havens took a vacation from flying activities during their winter months.
