American Aviation Company to enter the exhibition flying business, and Heth severed his connections with the Packard Motor Car Company.
 On May 17, 1911, Mitchell was in Marblehead, Massachusetts, to witness flight tests of their first plane, and on May 30th Heth started taking instruction at the Burgess School located at the Harvard Aviation Field, Atlantic, Massachusetts. His instructors were Harry N. Atwood and W. S. Burgess of the Burgess Company. Heth was their first student that year and soloed June 27th on a Burgess School machine. He had the misfortune of having to make a forced landing in a marsh with a broken crankshaft on his first solo flight but did so without injury to himself or damage to the plane. Following this Heth returned to Memphis to assist in preparations for company operations. At this time Mitchell was learning to fly at Dayton and upon his return the two men started a tour of exhibition flying with their planes. In August Heth made application for his flying license but the weather was so bad the day his tests were scheduled he could not fly, and arrangements were never made to try it again. On September 11th Heth and Mitchell flew at Memphis in a small local meet and Oscar Brindley joined them in that event; then on September 15th they all flew there again. Following this Heth and Mitchell were at Tupelo, Mississippi, December 5, 6 and 7; West Point, Mississippi, December 8 and 9; Canton, Mississippi, December 12 and 13, and Yazoo City, Mississippi, December 15 and 16.
  Starting on February 25, 1912, Heth and Mitchell flew at New Orleans, Louisiana; February 23 and 29 at Baton Rouge; March [[crossed out]] 4-9 [[/crossed out]] 4th to 9th at Montgomery, Alabama; April [[crossed out]] 15-20 [[/crossed out]] 15th to 20th at Birmingham, Alabama; and June [[crossed out]] 3-9 [[/crossed out]] 3rd to 9th at Lexington, Kentucky. Heth's parents were in Lexington to see him fly and he took his father up  for a ride. While there he also carried authorized mail that is on a route authorized by the Post Office Department. Following this he made flights at his hometown of Birmingham, Michigan, on June 15th and gave his father another ride.
