During his later years he took an interest in civic affairs and served as the Alameda County assessor. There Hoff passed away on June 12, 1959 at age 77. He was survived by his wife, a sister and two sons, both of whom were in Government military flying service. Burial was in the Golden Gate National Cemetery, San Francisco. He was a member of the Masonic Order, American Legion, and a past President of the Hayward Rotary Club.

Flying Pioneer William H. Hoff contributed much toward early American aviation history. He assisted in the first flying from aboard a ship, was a mechanic, aviator, and his name must be well recorded in the historical aviation records.
