Long Island where he became Assistant Engineer on design and construction of Fairehild Aeroplanes. There he supervised the design and construction of the FB-3 five-place Flying Boat, with folding wings and a pusher type Pratt & Whitney Wasp 420 H.P. engine. This plane was flown experimentally in 1929 with excellent results. He also designated a successful outboard hydroplane which won the Albany-New York Race in 1927. Later that year he designed an ingenious pontoon and 4-wheel retractable amphibious landing gear arrangement for Aero-marine-Klemm, which featured the wheels disappearing into the pontoons in flight. Following this he was design Engineer with Hall Aluminum Aircraft Co. for a time, then invented some special equipment for the tire industry. After this Kantner moved west and joined Consolidated Vultee. Remaining in the west until his retirement he now resides in San Diego, California.
Early Bird, Flying Pioneer Harold D. Kantner devoted most of his lifetime to aviation and great credit is justly due him for his many valued contributions to American aviation development. Always a competent designer and expert pilot, he developed an early sound technical knowledge of aircraft , both on the ground and in the air, and had few accidents. His planes were always exceptionally well built and maintained. His are memories today of having had a rewarding part in creating the air age that has become so much a part of having every day lives.
