went on for many years and they were used in all branches of the military services as well as civilian use. A trustworthy, durable machine, they performed many varied uses and were flown in every part of the globe. As the large radial air-cooled engines became reliable they were adapted to these planes and were used entirely until the last.

Some of the outstanding records of Loening amphibians include the MacMillan North Pole Edpedition with three planes in 1925, led by Richard E. Byrd; the Army's Pan-American Goodwill Flight around South America in 1926 with five planes; and the Alaskan Photographic Aerial Survey of Alaska by the Navy with four planes in 1926 and again in 1929.

To aid with commercial sales, pioneer aviator Beckwith Havens became Sales Manager for Loening in January, 1928, and in March of that year he started a sales contact trip across the United States flying an amphibian with passenger. During the year Loening brought out the 8-passenger DeLuxe enclosed cabin AIRYACHT amphibian powered by a Wright Cyclone engine, and also bought a DH MOTH sport plane for his personal use. In October the Loening Company was merged with the Keystone Aircraft Company, Bristol, Pennsylvania, a part of the Curtiss Wright group, and named the Keystone-Loening Division. At that time Loening retired from the organization to engage in consulting and personal aviation research.

He did consulting work for the Government and also Curtiss-Wright, Grumman and several other concerns...He also conducted experiments on single wheel landing gears for water machines. In June, 1929 he made a parachute jump at Mitchell Field, Long Island, for the thrill of it. That month the Keystone-Loening 4-place sport COMMUTER amphibian was announced. Originally designed by Loening, it was a biplane with Wright J-6, 300 H.P. tractor engine. On July 24th he obtained private flying license No. 7171. In December he formed the Grover Loening Aircraft Company, Inc. at Garden City, New York to specialize in the design and development of advanced types of aircraft under contract by the Government, as well as for private firms, and planned a design office to carry on such work.
