Early Wright - Curtiss Exhibition Pilot

Newell McGuire enrolled for instruction with the Lillie School at San Antonio, Texas, as it opened in January, 1913.  There he was taught to fly by Andrew Drew and DeLloyd Thompson on Lillie['s] Wright planes, and by February 1st was second in the class.  Continuing with his school work, he accompanied the class when it returned to Cicero Field, Chicago, in the spring, where he made his first solo flight on June 17th. [On] June 24th he soloed the school['s] Day Tractor and liked it so well he continued for some time to make daily flights on it.  July 18th he flew a Lillie-[W]right for his license, No. 255, granted August 6, 1913.

In late July he started helping Lillie as an instructor and continued through August.  Late that month he started flying the [50 hp.,] Gnome[-engined] Lillie Tractor and [in it he] flew his first public exhibition at [M]onroe, [W]isconsin on [S]eptember 13th[.] [[strikethrough]] Using this machine [[/strikethrough]] [He] continued [[strikethrough]] on [[/strikethrough]] [w]ith DeLloyd Thompson after the death of [M]ax Lillie, and together they finished the school activities and flew several exhibition on dates that fall.  Early in November they moved south to fly exhibitions, Thompson using the Gnome Tractor and McGuire the Day Tractor.

In February, 1914 McGuire conducted a series of tests at Cicero, using the Day Tractor equipped with the Macy [a]utomatic [s]tabilizer. In June, he and Floyd A. Logan formed the Continental Aviation Company to do exhibition work using Curtiss [b]iplanes. He started flying a Curtiss with 75 [[strikethrough]] [H.P.] [[/strikethrough]] [hp.,] Curtiss engine at Cicero, making daily practice flights. On July 4th he flew his
