On January 1, 1913 he was at Moberly, Missouri, then on February 16 he flew from Lenexa to Kansas City, Missouri, under contract with the Young Aviation Company, the booking agent for him at that time. April 19 and 20 McMillen flew at Claremore, Kansas, with Robert Fowler. On May 30 he flew at Kansas City, Missouri, with Glen Tate and William Evans. There he carried 100 lb of a special edition of THE POST from the flying field to a downtown park. July 4 to 7 he was at Waterloo, Iowa, where on the 5th he refused to fly on schedule due to a high wind at that time. The crowd really "got on him" so he finally offered to go up IF the leader of the hecklers would go with him as a passenger. As a result the crowd quieted down and McMillen made the flight later. He next flew at Langdon, North Dakota, August 6 and 7, then on September 1 he was at Morse Bluff, Nebraska, where he made three flights. September 17 to 19 he flew at Delwood Park, Grand Island, Nebraska, with Bleriot pilot J. H. Worden. November 1 to 3 McMillen flew at El Paso, Texas, with Katherine Stinson.
In 1914 Young Aviation Company of Kansas City was still handling the booking for him. July 4 to 14, McMillen flew two flights a day at the Michigan State Fair grounds, Detroit, Michigan. On Labor Day he exhibited at Horton, Kansas, then on September 17 was at Mackinaw, Illinois. Following this he flew at a fair at Hawkins, Kansas, then was at Omaha, Nebraska, October 10 to 18. Later that month he reportedly contracted to be come instructor at a new flying school being organized in Omaha.
In early 1915 with the war raging in Europe, there was a great wave of interest all over the country in forming Aviation Sections of National Guard units. The Nebraska National Guard started a unit with pioneer Nebraska aviator C. W. Shaffer commissioned as Captain, and Chief of Aviation. Shaffer, previously known as Bob St. Henry, was a wellknown early exhibition pilot and owned his own plane. He organized a Flying Corps with headquarters at the State Fair grounds, Lincoln, Nebraska. McMillen enlisted, was also commissioned Captain, and furnished his airplane.
