Bernetta A. Miller was born at Canton, Ohio, January 11, 1886. Information is lacking concerning her early life and education.

After becoming interested in flying she enrolled for instruction at the Moisant Flying School at Hempstead Plains, Long Island, New York, in the early summer of 1912. The school had opened about May 1st with graduate Moisant pilot S. S. Jerwan as instructor. There Miss Miller Learned to fly on a Moisant Bleriot-type monoplane powered by a 3-cylinder, 35 H.P., Anzani engine. This was a single-seat machine and, with verbal ground instruction only, she began grass cutting practice, gradually progressing to short straightaway hops. During late June she had a smash-up during a practice hop but was not injured.

After sufficient practice on the school machine she advanced to a 50 h.p., Gnome rotary-engine Moisant monoplane. During August she was flying capably and continued her practice in preparation for taking the tests for a pilot license. Miss Miller was granted F.A.I. Pilot License No. 177 on September 25, 1912.

Following this Miss Miller joined the Moisant Company group of pilots. In early October she was sent to Washington, D.C.,
