Elmer L. Partridge was born in 1880, place unknown. Henry C. "Pop" Keller was reportedly born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1881. Facts concerning their exact birth dates, education and early lives are lacking, but evidently they engaged in mechanical trades.

Both men developed an early interest in aviation and when Cicero Flying Field was formally opened at Chicago, Illinois in June, 1911 Keller was a mechanic in the hangars, assisting various experimental plane builders. Over the winter of 1911-1912 he built a plane, called the Keller Multiplane, having seven surfaces and powered by a 30 H.P. Bates engine. It was completed in March, 1912 but nothing of note came of this venture.
