WASHINGTON TRAFFIC DEMANDS NEGRO TROLLEY OPERATORS
[ad] Transportation is Essential to National Defense

THERE is no need for the poor service and increasing danger which bus and street car passengers now experience in Washington. The employment of Negro motormen and conductors would relieve the situation greatly.
THE WORKERS ARE HERE - USE THEM!
The Capital Transit Company needs bus and street car operators badly. It is trying to secure them from out of town, but cannot find enough. Meanwhile, our already overcrowded City faces a transportation crisis. Our accident rate is steadily mounting.
There are many competent Negro bus and street car operators right here looking for jobs. Yet, Capital Transit refuses to hire a single one.

This is foolish. It is undemocratic. It hinders the war effort in the nation's capital. THIS POLICY MUST BE CHANGED!

OTHER CITIES USE NEGRO OPERATORS
Mr. Otto S. Beyer, Director of the Division of Transport Personnel, Office of Defense Transportation, recently told the American Transit Association Convention that it should make greater use of Negro bus drivers and motormen. We don't have ANY in Washington.
Mr. Beyer cited the successful employment of Negro operators in New York City, New Jersey, Florida and California. He might also have listed Detroit, Cleveland, and a number of other cities.
If other communities can solve their problem by using Negro operators, why can't we in Washington? We can - and we must!
