REPORT OF THE NOMINATING COMMITTEE

The Nominating Committee met on September 20 and discussed its progress toward making a recommendation for the nomination of an individual in anticipation of Mrs. Armstrong's retirement. Discussion also touched on internal processes which might facilitate future appointments.

THE SECRETARY'S REPORT

Mr. Adams briefed the Regents on a variety of matters which did not lend themselves to written presentation in advance of this meeting.

National Air and Space Museum Extension

The Secretary introduced a proposal that came on behalf of the development of a civil aeronautics museum at the Pittsburgh airport. He noted that the proposed museum would be self-financed and not dependent on the Smithsonian and that the proponents seek the Smithsonian's encouragement, the Institution's willingness to lend objects as well as advice, and the establishment of a network of air and space museums. In the Secretary's view, none of these suggestions requires action by the Board at this time, as they are consistent with activities already undertaken or planned at the Institution.

Policy on Remote Museum Operations: Long-Term Planning and Priorities

The Regents asked to consider, at their next meeting, a draft policy statement on what kinds of responsibilities the Smithsonian would be willing to accept on behalf of museums outside of the Washington metropolitan area.
