APPOINTMENTS TO SMITHSONIAN BOARDS AND COMMISSIONS

VOTED that the Board of Regents appoints Arthur Gray, Jr. and G. Robert Durham to the National Board of the National Museum of Natural History.

The National Board of the National Museum of Natural History, established by the Board of Regents in 1989, currently has 21 members and is seeking to fill the remaining 11 positions permitted. It is now proposed to appoint to the Board Arthur Gray, Jr. and G. Robert Durham whose biographical sketches appear below. A list of the membership of the Board as proposed is given thereunder. The following motion is suggested:

VOTED that the Board of Regents appoints Arthur Gray, Jr. and G. Robert Durham to the National Board of the National Museum of Natural History.

Arthur Gray, Jr., President and Chief Executive Officer of Dreyfus Personal Management, Inc., in New York City, attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his Air Force service during World War II. He is President of the 795 Corporation (The Pierre Hotel) and of the Lerner Gray Foundation, a trustee of the American Museum of Natural History and of the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church, Chairman of the Executive Committee and Past President of the Boy's Athletic League, and a Director of the International Center for the Disabled, the Seventh Generation, and Genelabs Technology, Inc. His previous business activities include service as the Managing Director of Dreman Gray & Embry, investment counselors (1981-83), Chairman of the Tallasi Management Company, investment advisors (1975-80), first vice-president of Mitchell Hutchins & Co., investment brokers (1974-75), and Senior Partner, Gray & Co., investment brokers.

G. Robert Durham is President and Chief Executive Officer of Walter Industries in Tampa, Florida. He previously served as Executive Vice President of Phelps Dodge Aluminum Corporation and President and Chief Executive Officer of Conalco. He has been Chairman of the Board of the Copper Development Association and Vice Chairman of the American Mining Congress. He is a 1951 graduate of Purdue University.

It should be noted that in the course of the past year, National Board members Juanita Baranco and James W. Valentine resigned and the membership of Paul R. Ehrlich on the board has lapsed because he did not attend the required number of meetings. Accordingly, with the proposed appointments, the membership of the National Board of the National Museum of Natural History will be as follows:
