SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION 1279

objection, the minutes were approved.

DISCUSSION OF AN EVENING MEETING

After discussion, the Chancellor requested the Secretary to arrange an evening meeting before the close of the present session of Congress, preferably between the last week in February and the first week in April. The Chancellor stated that it would be most beneficial to the Regents in acquainting them with the work of the Institution, if a second meeting were held each year in conjunction with scientists of the different departments so that the Board members could learn more about the Institution firsthand. The Secretary was asked to arrange for such a meeting each year thereafter.

CHANGES IN THE BOARD OF REGENTS

The Secretary stated that there would be two vacancies soon in the class of Senate Regents, the first through the retirement of Senator Wallace H. White, Jr., of Maine, and the second through the election of Senator Barkley as Vice-President.

Dr. Wetmore further stated that the name of Dr. Jerome C. Hunsaker, of Massachusetts, as a Citizen Regent, to replace the Honorable Frederic C. Walcott, of Connecticut, retired, had been submitted to Congress.

ANNUAL REPORT OF THE SECRETARY

The Secretary submitted his Annual Report for the fiscal year ending June 30, 1948, including the Financial Report of the Executive Committee, in printed form, stating that copies were before the Regents at the meeting. The Report was accepted as presented.
