SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION  1310                          

Under the date of September 28, 1949, the United States Court of Appeals issued an order stating that the Court having duly considered a petition for a rehearing, the rehearing was denied.

The Institution was represented in this action by the Department of Justice through Mr. Marvin C. Taylor, Special Attorney.

ANNUAL REPORT OF THE SMITHSONIAN ART COMMISSION

The twenty-seventh Annual Meeting of the Commission was held on December 6, 1949. Nine members were present and, acting as the advisory committee on the acceptance of works of art which had been offered to the National Collection of Fine Arts since the last meeting, recommended the following works for acceptance:

The painting, Gold Mining, Cripple Creek, by Ernest Lawson, N.A., a purchase of the Ranger Fund, for acceptance for the National Collection of Fine Arts.

The Portrait of Salmon P. Chase by the James Reid Lambdin, offered anonymously, for acceptance for the National Portrait Gallery.

The bronze bust of Orville Wright by Oskar J. W. Hansen, offered by Mr. and Mrs. Frackelton, was suggested as appropriate for the National Air Museum.

The Reclining Tiger by Charles R. Knight offered by the estate of Mr. Vernon Bailey, was suggested as an appropriate accession for the National Museum.

On motion, the recommendations were approved.

The Commission also voted to recommend to the Board of Regents the re-election for the usual four-year period of the following members whose terms expire in 1949:

Mahonri M. Young
