Purpose: Introduce the MS to IFR flight planning and airways navigation in the T-38 using TACAN as a primary navaid

•Flights through Inst/Fam 1
•Flight Fam Ground School 1

PRIMARY OBJECTIVES
Pilot:  
•MONITORS AND ASSISTS AS REQUIRED

MS:     
•PERFORM FLIGHT PLANNING
•PREPARE NAVIGATION CARDS
•FILE FLIGHT PLAN
•COMPUTE TAKEOFF DATA
•DIRECT PILOT TO FLY ENTIRE FLIGHT WITH TACAN (USE HIGH ALTITUDE CHART)
•MONITOR TACAN PENETRATION AND APPROACH
•PERFORM ENROUTE VOICE PROCEDURES
•DIRECT PILOT FOR RADIAL INTERCEPTS 
•CONTROL RADIO AND TACAN
•DIRECT EMERGENCY PROCEDURES FOR SIMULATED HYDRAULIC SYSTEM FAILURE

PREFLIGHT
Pilot:  
•CROSS-COUNTRY ROUND-ROBIN ASSIST WITH ENROUTE NAV CARD
•BRIEFS MS ON ALL DETAILS TO ACHIEVE OBJECTIVES
•BRIEF MS ON CALCULATING CEFS - CFL - SETO
•REVIEW DIVERT PROCEDURES
•PERFORM SAFETY BRIEFING--STA-IN PROCEDURES, LOSS OF INTERCOM, T/O EMERGENCIES, PERTINENT IMMEDIATE ACTION EMERGENCIES
•REVIEW HYDRAULIC SYSTEM/HYDRAULIC EMERGENCIES

MS:     
•ASSIST IN PLANNING CROSS-COUNTRY ROUND-ROBIN. WRITE UP NAV CARD
•CALCULATE TAKEOFF DATA (T/O ROLL - CEFS - CFL - SETO)
•LDG DATA (LANDING ROLL - 9000 #A/C)
•REVIEW CHECKLIST AND EMERGENCY CHECKLIST

CONDUCT OF FLIGHT

•AS CONDITIONS PERMIT PILOTS MAY ALLOW THE MS TO FLY THE AIRPLANE AT ALTITUDES ABOVE 5,000 FEET AGL IN VFR CONDITIONS
      
•DIRECT PILOT IN APPROACH

•DIRECTS PILOT IN RADICAL INTERCEPT

•RESPONDS WITH CHECKLIST TO SIMULATED HYDRAULIC SYSTEM EMERGENCY

DEBRIEF
•Discuss each primary objective
•Discuss any derivations from SOP made in flight
•Review MS progress
