September 26

1978 - Tuesday 36° at 7 AM. Beautiful morning & day. Lots of ducks for corn - tray working well. 
Wes finished grass trimming - outside fence - veg. garden - banks etc. Brought soil to rock garden at sheds and planted Siberian and Japanese iris. Spread fence around cardinal bed.
I took Billie Ann Tracy, Helen - Louise & Pat Coller to lunch at Glues - on to annual Garden Club Meeting at Mrs. Randolph's. Won tulips for attendance at Greenhouse last year.

1979 - Wednesday - 46° at 6 AM - Sun 6:43 - 6:47. Lone white domestic with about 100 Mallards. Pat Miller here to clean for last time - moving to Florida. Chased the white duck and put her back over the fence. Drove to Fallsview after lunch, stopping at bank - bought gas $1.02/gal. Beautiful weather - some trees colored. Room 447 East wing. Cocktail party and dinner. Saw a few old faces.

1980 - Friday - 56° at 6:30. Had light shower in night - only a trace in rain gauge. Beautiful day - windy - like fall -- to bad not an inch of rain at least last night. Eileen phoned from London - home Monday night.
Wes had shop hour - Finished painting cellar door. I went for haircut - took dahlias to Pat Coller. Washed front gutters. Wes cut flat lawn. To Sattlers at 5:30 for drink - they took us and Ross' to Waccabuc for seafood buffet.

1981 - Saturday - in Boston - AHS - Continental Breakfast - bus at 7:30 for North Shore Tour - Rock Garden (alpine Plants) of Mr. and Mrs. Hull.
Home of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Dane - Pride's Crossing - Frick Estate (her Grandfather) then to Long Hill Sedgwick Gardens - Beverly and Wenham, Mass., to Nor'East Miniature Roses, Rawley Mass., to Peabody Museum, Salem box lunch there - Essex Institute (period home) back to Hotel - dinner there by ourselves.

1982 - Sunday - 51° at 6:30 - Foggy - clear sunny morning - clouded up in evening.
to 8 o'clock Mass - Went to see Alex' picture on Perk & Elmer's Telescope - Wes balanced checkbook - I unpacked - did a wash - cultivated veg garden - threw out most cucumbers, some lettuce and peppers. Admired new landing Wes had made at North deck steps. Watered azaleas, ferns etc. Cut grass after rolling up Boo's pen fence. 

September 27

1978 - Wednesday - 32° at 7 AM. Foggy morning became a beautiful day.
To bank - Bethel Post Office - mailed birthday gifts to Bet and Sally - gasoline - discovered gas top missing & bought new one. Mowed lawns - picked strawberries, peppers - tomatoes. Some of garden failed  in frost. 
I went to Rectory at 8pm for Aesthetics Committee - Alex had model for altar.

1979 - Thursday - at Fallsview - beautiful warm day.
Played golf morning and afternoon, using an electric cart. Greens very tricky - course in beautiful shape. 
Dinner and bed - didn't go to the show. 

1980 - Saturday. 40° at 6 AM. Dark at breakfast. Cold clear windy day. Needed sweaters on to work. Put heat on for dinner and had a fire. Joe Keller here - probably for last time. Finished spreading chips on blueberries - put fence around them. Transplanted couple Siberian Iris and daylilies and one phlox in Perennial Garden. Joe split wood. Lots of Mallard but becoming more shy. Little family has split up - some time only three - know them because they are more friendly.  

1981 Sunday - in Boston AHS - 8 o'clock Mass at Our Lady of Victories Church. Arabella Street after breakfast in hotel. Checked out (decided not to complete day at AHS meeting) left 9:30 for Mass. Pike to Framingham Garden-in-the-Woods - closed on Sundays - had brunch at "Thursdays" - home at 3 pm after shop at Marcus. Mike had finished deck - looks great - and made door for crawlspace - stained shelves in laundry - bathroom - closet for Wes in bedroom. 

1982 - Monday - 57° at 7 AM - Slept late - Raining cleared in afternoon - .6 inch rain - Wes said best in couple of weeks.
Brought this diary up to date with Guggie's activities. Paid bills - sorted mail. To Ridgefield left film for developing - shopped for groceries and birthday wrappings. Lunch and nap. Picked strawberries when rain stopped - we walked about trying to plan south side. Wes had shop hour.
