July 4


1983 - Monday - G at Tarrytown over night.  Wes in Presbyterian.  I drove to Ridgebury - did wash - watered - took up Impatiens and Begonias Eileen gave me - didn't get to plant them as Alex - John Hartcorn and Louise McKeon stopped by to inquire about Wes.  Gizella invited me for hamburger lunch.  To hospital at three - Wes' condition unchanged, learned late afternoon would have cystectomony tomorrow - a great disappointment & shock to him.  I returned to Eileen's - went to fireworks at High School at 9 pm.

1984 - Wednesday - 60° at 6 AM - Sun up red - we opened sliders and skylights to let cool air in as forecast is for hot and muggy.  Not too bad a day - looked like rain at time but none.  Wes worked on wall in Bog Garden.  I made labels for new plants in wall garden.  After early lunch, to Ballard Park to hear Youth Orchestra concert - lots of people looked great in park.  Home to cut north grass and cultivate flower beds.  To Rosses at 6:30 for dinner and to watch fireworks on horizon.  Beautiful evening.

1985 - Thursday - 60° at 6:30 - Slept late - up at 6:20.  Beautiful morning - and day & evening.
To 7:30 o'clock Mass.  Made coffee cake.  Wes worked on Garden Room walk - lowering the stones close to the terrace stones - raising those close to the wall - making a step in between.  I transplanted lettuce - throwing on the compost those gone to seed - planted beans - Watered.
Enjoyed a nap on loungers in Garden Room.  To Rosses at 6:30 for dinner and to watch fireworks on horizon - beautiful scene.  Father Tighe - Mary Luke & McKeons there.

1986 - Friday - Holmdens and Eileen & Martin Shedlocke with us.  Up early - beautiful day.  Cool breeze - Drove to Purdy's - caught 7:23 train to NYC.  Met Eileen and Bit at Grand Central - subway to Fulton Street - we had seats in North Bleechers of Battery Park for Tall Ships - 22 of them - great sight - lots of boats people watching - we returned to Ridgefield - Eileen & Bit to Tarrytown - bad chicken salad and corn - watched fireworks on TV - Wes had rested his leg most of day

1987 - Saturday - 68° at 7 AM.  H H H.  Cut Astilbe and Leucothoe before breakfast for church flowers - later Agapanthus - Gizella cut her beebalm.  Cindy Bruno brought church key & container - Louise McKeon came with Don John to see our garden - brought [[?Oasis]] - Arranged flowers in church - Wes weeded on North Slope - put leaf mulch on Foamflowers - we put fencing around day lilies at mailbox as deer eating them - watered rhododendron to right of Garden Room - improves it greatly - to Rosses at 7 pm for dinner and to watch fireworks!  Home at 10:45 PM.


July 5

1983 - Tuesday - Wes in hospital.  G at Tarrytown overnight - to Ridgebury early morning - made Mass at 7:30.  Planted white Impatiens and Begonias Eileen gave us - watered - tied up tomatoes - Slight shower 11 AM - prevented grass cutting.  Couldn't reach Dr Puckerer - went early to hospital and had to wait until 3 to see Wes.  He had improved so the cystoscophy was put off - good news - may be home on weekend.  I went to Eileen's for evening.

1984 - Thursday.  72° at 6 AM 0 Sun coming up red - muggy, cloudy day - thunder around all afternoon and rain, heavy at times, from 5 o'clock on.
We went to Brewster - bought stamps - on to Brewster North Station (way out there near Carmel) looked over parking lot - 25¢ for 4 hours - home via I-8H.  Wes continued work on Bog Wall, bringing down big stones from along road - I cut sough grass, cultivated shade gardens.  Quit early account humidity & rain.

1985 - Friday - 60° at 6:30 - Slept late.  Cloudy, warm and humid day.
Wes bought 4 flagstones at Dolans and finished the Garden Room.  Looks wonderful.  Pulled out Sensitive Ferns growing at St Fiacre and planted them with others at well/shed walk.  Did wash & ironed.  Japanese Beetles gathering in garden along garage wall.  Staked some snapdragons.  Put on three wheelbarrow loads of chipped leaves along Wood Knoll.

1986 - Saturday - Beautiful day - More warm & humid.  Holmdens and Shedlocke's left for Eileen's at 8:15, they are to go into NYC to see Lily Tomlin & walk about, returning to Tarrytown for the night.
We cleaned up breakfast dishes - I worked in garden deadheading & cultivating - moved lawn.  Wes' leg is a little better but he took it easy - walked about seeing all jobs we hope to do.  We relaxed with a gin & tonic in evening in garden room - dinner on deck.

1987 - Sunday.  60° at 6 AM.  Clear - Sunny - less humidity.  To 8 o'clock Mass.  Father Ed. told of burglary last Wednesday at the church.  Wes cleaned kitchen - den - john.  I clipped edges of garden - watered pots and rhododendron.  Lunch in garden room.  Put leaf mulch on transplanted Heuchera.  To meeting of Hemlock Hills Beach Association - paid $50 dues.  Picked up Alex and Helen at 5:30 - to Hartcorns.  They drove us all in van to Father Tighe's in North Stamford - good dinner - enjoyed his garden.
