December 5

1983 - Monday - 34° at 7AM - Cloudy.
Sun 7:06-4:28 - Became a beautiful sunny morning clouded up in afternoon but not bad.
I went to Muriel Pedersen - off Peaceable Street - to make a Christmas wreath - shopped Stop & Shop - Bank and Hardware Store - replaced cable clamps for proper size - Wes put them on bird feeder wire - He worked in shop - Took a walk after lunch - split wood - picked leaves from Wall Garden  Wes went to Mary Luke's to advise on wet basement.  To Ruth Sharp for a drink at 5 pm - Eve Whitehouse had 2 Dandie Dinmounts [[Dinmonts]]

1984 - Wednesday - 28° at 6:45.  Clear.  Beautiful clear cold sunny winter day.
Put burlap around dwarf pine - wire over wall garden after enclosing individual dwarf evergreens in wire cages.  Used rest of chicken wire around leatherleaf viburnum, one azalea and several laurel on Wood Knoll.  A big job took a long time - Ryder express delivered our Teak Bench - returned later from Pound Ridge where he discovered he gave us the wrong package!  Put leaf mulch on plants moved this fall.  Lot accomplished!

1985 - Thursday - 23° at 6 AM.  Re former years, milk at Marcus now $1.89 gallon - Texaco stock 31 3/4 - came back from 30 past few days - Judge rules today and tomorrow on Pennzoil suit, and 10 1/2 billion fine.
To Mass.  Wes picked up eye drops prescription - we did the crossword puzzle - Wes had afternoon in shop.
Out in the morning when sun was out - put wooden rain barrel under deck - it still had ice & water in it - put concrete birdbath in crawl space - Wes brought in wood I put out thistle feeder - broke up big Streptocarpus - repotted 2 Amaryllis - Brought sewing machine to Kitchen - mended.

1986 - Friday - 32° at 7:30 - Partly cloudy.  Holmden's moving day, from Williamsville to Youngstown.
Now paying $1.75 at Marcus for 2% fat milk - Texaco stock 35 1/4
Cleared to beautiful winter day.  Wrapped Bit's blouse and mailed it from Backus Ave post office.  Wes looked for dome bird feeder raccoon had taken down and over the cliff - wired it to prevent reoccurrence.  We continued wiring against deer - did Carlson's azalea over Piping Boy - leucothoe behind shade garden - emerald gaiety - santolina - ran out of pots

1987 - Saturday - 30° at 7 AM - Sunny in morning - some clouds - windy and cold in p.m.
To Post Office for stamps and to mail Charlesworth Book to Holmden's - Marcus - picked up table cloth.  To Deeps Market - home.
Brought out all wire from crawlspace - Wes cut off wire at upper gate - put a smaller piece there - I trimmed Juniper at roadside preparatory to covering that too cold to do outside work in P.M. - Wes cleaned shop - I sewed zipper in pleated brown skirt.


December 6

1983 - Tuesday - 38° at 6:30 (after breakfast) Dark.  Rain all day, starting about 10 AM - light at first then heavy at times.  To Mass.  To Covered Bridge for a Scotch Pine Christmas tree - wreath for newest post and ground pine roping.  Gizella picked me up and we joined Helen Ross and Lucienne at Keeler Tavern at 11 o'clock for lunch - home at 12:45 - Wes had worked in shop - Nap - Couldn't move sewing machine downstairs - too heavy.  
MacKenzie brought discs for the saw and a T-slide - ground disc down.  Heavy winds at night.

1984 - Thursday - 34° at 6AM - Light snow overnight.  About 2" of wet snow - heavy.  Cloudy, cold day - windy.  Not over 32°.  To Mass before plows were on side roads.
Put the teak bench together - carried it to "Garden Room" in front of Rhododendron - looks beautiful. 
Lunch and nap.  Wrote some Christmas cards. 
Shoveled front walk.  Did filing of piled up garden material, etc. - worked on crossword puzzle.

1985 - Friday - 29° at 7AM - Snow flurries - about 1/2 in. on ground - before ending around noon there was 1 1/2 inches.  NYC had more.  I shopped Stop & Shop - worked at the greenhouse for an hour (planted cuttings of our dwarf Laurel) picked up Helen at the Beauty Shop and we went to Keeler Tavern for lunch - the 11AM sitting so home at 12:30 - Nap - Cut tablecloth from king size sheet - 4 napkins.  Wes in shop.  Watched "The Importance of Being Ernest" with Wendy Hiller at 9 pm on Channel 13 - very good!

1986 - Saturday - 22° at 7:15 - clear - Phoned Holmdens.  They are moved in - cramped and exhausted but in Youngstown. 
Went to Youngs for more fencing and stakes - bananas and a few supplies from Stop & Shop - one bag for $16.00!  Continued with deer fencing - closed in entire garden room and the dell walk rhododendron and laurel.  Wes planned the upper north steps fencing.  Mike Mannion came to put last coat on shop lavatory ceiling.  To Tracy's at 5:30 for a cocktail party - took Billie home - back here at 7:30.

1987 - Sunday - 29° at 6AM - Beautiful sky about 6:45 - Sunny but cold and windy.  To 8 o'clock Mass - I was Lector.
Put some wire over Juniper at entrance outside fence - ran out of wire and found it too cold on our hands to work without gloves - which couldn't use tying twisters.  
Read papers.  I finished belt section widening of pleated brown skirt.  Wes cleaned shop lavatory.
