October 2

1988 - Sunday - 58° at 7AM - Cloudy - looked like rain - none - very warm - 70° at 6 PM. Light rain at dinnertime.
To 8 o'clock Mass - I was Lector substituting for Ed Finoldi who will do it for me next Sunday.
Wes inspected the deer fence and measured for replacement wire - filled up opening at Road/Grouse line with brush. I cut grass - cut off Heliopsis and most Rudbeckia - trimmed grass edges

1989 - Monday - Raining - in 60's - mild. Eileen and dogs were with us overnight - she left at 8:30. Wes' ear a little better but made doctor (James) appointment at 3 - had infection in inner ear - penicillin - blood pressure good - I wrote to Petey Cerf on her offer of gift to Ballard. Wes picked up Alex Ross at 11:30 - took him for haircut - we had soup & sandwich luncheon - men took naps - poor Alex is quite confused. Wes took him home at 4:30 - Helen had played bridge.

1990 - Tuesday - 53° at 6 AM - Beautiful day - "fallish" - high wind. To Mass. Wes dropped me at Ballard to work - he went to Recycling - Youngs for peat moss - cleaners - bought a card for Castle's anniversary on the 4th - returned for me at 11:30. We started cutting perennials down in Ballard. After lunch I moved New England Asters to Daylily bed. Wes took out a big stone upper northeast slope - put 2 spruce from that area into black pots to give away next spring.

1991 - Wednesday - 60° at 4:30 - Cloudy - damp until ten o'clock - warm - sunny. Did a wash 
To Frank Leschke's Funeral Service at St Stephen's at 11. Wes reset the new bird feeder deeper - rolled out the mole runs in the grass. I cut it. Picked a few beans and cherry tomatoes. Used last of leaf chips from shed pile on Dolls Eye garden. Wes dug out big and little stones from East (north) slope - used them at path edge.

1992 - Friday - 40° at 6:30 - Fair beautiful day. To Mass. Packed up plants giving away & left them at Kathleen Eason's (lilies) & greenhouse - for Gigi Adams and Liz Montanri - met Helen Ross there - she gave us date loaf for family visit - to bank - Wes bought film - I found gift wrapping paper - wrapped up presents - lunch & nap - Wes rolled south grass - heavy job - I went to S & S - forgot my shopping list - lots of people - home to bring up wheel barrow loads of leaf chips to cover exposed earth where transplanted. Picked beans - last I think -

October 3

1988 - Monday - 58° at 6 AM - Beautiful AM - clouded up in PM - naturally - our windows were washed.
To Mass. Prepared window ledges etc for Vee Grenier & brother - here noon to 2 pm. Took a short nap. Washed Solar floor & dinette area - Wes applied Stonyl
I made muffins for tomorrow's Ballard crew.
No rain in evening - dreary.

1989 - Tuesday - 64° at 6 AM - Foggy - cleared to mostly sunny day - strong wind in afternoon - 56° at 6 PM. One inch rain yesterday. To Mass
I worked at Ballard with Muriel Pedersen - Wes took off screens - brought out winter clothes. After lunch Wes lowered stone edging along path to upper beds. I planted scilla & lilies from Van Engelin - red Monarda Gizella gave me - moved Phlox Sir John Falstaff in triangle bed.

1990 - Wednesday - 44° at 7:30 - Wonderful to sleep late. Fair, beautiful day - quite mild. Wes emptied Freddy pool and took in that pump. Started on the Piper. I cut down a few more perennials - moved dwarf grasses to base of striped maple on knoll. Wes planted a bush honeysuckle in dell - near fence - moved a small hemlock into its place on top (holding bed)
Sent checks to Franklin-Dreyfus-Nuveen Reserve for investment in tax free bonds.

1991 - Thursday - 63° at 6 AM - no rain - cloudy damp until mid-afternoon when sun came out. Warm.
To Mass. To Stop & Shop - gasoline ($1.50/gal) bank - left eyeglass prescription at Sterling (Mall) for my glasses - returned for them in afternoon. Wrapped presents to take to Lock Haven. Did a work wash. Worked in garden late afternoon - cut down sunflowers - cultivated edges. Wes cut grass at north top.

1992 - Saturday 56° at 8 AM - Fair. Slept late. Beautiful day - much warmer in afternoon - didn't need sweaters. Wes rehung well bucket - had soaked it in water - worked on paths at well. Dug up hemlock tree (at holding beds) we're giving to Holmdens
I made a stew and a chicken dish - cranberry and apple pudding  Raked cimicifuga bed - cultivated behind shade garden - took in lots of stakes
Phoned Joan - she had good report from Oncologist - needs bone scan & will take pills for chemotherapy.
