Family Muricidae. Nos 8, 9, [[crossed-out]] 10 [[crossed-out]] 10
This family is distributed throughout the seas of the globe, and nearly all the species produce a purple liquid. The ancients obtained the famous Tyrian purple dye from the common Murex trunculus of the Mediterranean Sea. The Oyster Drill, (Urosalpinx cinereus) so destructive to the oyster of the Atlantic coast of the United States, is a member of this family.
