35. Family Veneridae. No 158-161 Many of the members of this large family have elegant shells, often marked with V shaped figures. The famous Quahog or Round Clam of New England or the Common Clam of New York, Philadelphia and other [[^Atlantic]] cities ([[underline]] Venus mercenaria [[/underline]]) belongs to this family, and ranges from New England to Florida. Its shell was used by the Indians for making wampum. Other species of this family are eaten in various parts of the world
