Daughter Of Indian Athlete To Speak

A strong proponent for returning surplus government lands to the American Indian will be featured Thursday in the first of a series of special programs by the West Texas State University Student Activities Council.

Grace Thorpe, daughter of famed athlete Jim Thorpe and former public relations director for the Indians on Alcatraz Island, will discuss the New Indian Movement at 8 p.m. in the Activities Center ballroom on campus.

A direct descendant of Chief Blackhawk, noted Sauk and Fox chieftain, Miss Thorpe left an advertising job in New York City 12 years ago to spearhead the Indian crusade for surplus federal lands.

Since that time she has been arrested three times for Indian "invasions," served as public relations director for major Indian projects and lived on Alcatraz Island for three months. She is presently coordinator of the Deganawidah-Quetzllcoatl University, established for Indians and Chicanos.

Although she had no formal education after high school, Miss Thorpe has studied in many programs, including the Industrial Development Council at Arizona State University, the University of Wisconsin's extension program and the Dale Carnegie Institute. She served for a year in the National Congress of American Indians.

The chief goal of the Return Surplus Lands to the Indian Project (RSLIP), which Miss Thorpe heads, is to win the right to bid on original Indian lands now declared surplus and are expected to go on sale to local and state governments and commercial and industrial firms in the future.

Claiming the legitimacy of the Sioux Treaty of 1868 which stated that U.S. surplus land will revert back to the Indians, Miss Thorpe contends "the federal government has a moral obligation to give Indian tribes and organizations an opportunity to bid on these original Indian lands now declared surplus."

She cites her football-playing father as the primary influence in her fight for Indian rights. "He never left the field," she says. The 200-pound daughter of the well-known athlete has been said to display many of her father's fighting qualities.

Other offerings on this year's Student Activities Council special programs include family pop-rock group, The Cowsills, to appear Oct. 28; educator-columnist Dr. Max Rafferty, Nov. 18 and actor and mass communication authority Dr. Robert Vaughn, April 24.

In addition to these, the SAC will also sponsor two other events during the school year.

They are presentations by The Colours, progressive singing group, scheduled Sept. 17, and Le Treteau De Paris, French acting troupe scheduled April 23 at Canyon High School. Special admission will be charged for these events Jim Holston, SAC program director, says.

Tickets for other programs on the series will be free to WTSU students, $1 for non-WTSU students and $2 for adults. Tickets for the Thorpe lecture are on sale and may be purchased at the Activities Center.

Tower To Appear Sept. 7

A report on national defense by Republican U.S. Sen. John Tower of Texas will open a series of nine special programs at West Texas State University Sept. 7.

The offerings are being presented under auspices of the university's Special Programs Committee, headed by Dr. John Green, dean of the School of Fine Arts. The Department of Military Science is co-sponsoring the Tower appearance.

Now in his 10th year in office, Tower was the youngest Senate member when he came to office in 1961—the first Republican elected to the Senate from Texas since 1870.

He served as chairman of the Nixon-Agnew Key Issues Committee during the 1968 campaign and headed the GOP Senatorial Campaign Committee during the 91st Congress.

Tower now serves on the influential Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee and the Armed Forces Committee.

The Houston-born senator holds a bachelor's degree from Southwestern University at Georgetown, Tex., and a Master's Degree in political science from Southern Methodist University. Graduate studies were undertaken at the University of London. He holds honorary doctoral degrees from Southwestern, Howard Payne College at Brown-
