NAWAC NEWS … Jeri Kemp

We shall each month feature an Indian women whose spirit inspires all;that is, an Indian woman like the one of whom Black Elk's daughter Nemaqueh speaks: "The gentleness of a baby's breath, the strength of a cyclone, today's... Indian woman."

Our first Indian woman of the month is Mrs. Jeri Kemp, Comanche. Jeri, like many Indian women, is involved in the Indian movement in a number of areas. She is administrative assistant of the Native American Studies program at Tecumseh Center, UC, Davis (some have said she is irreplaceable) and, consequently, she administratively assists DQU as well. She is an emphatic advocate of educational reform. She demands accuracy of history accounts and textbooks which no longer degrade the Native American.

Jeri, who was born and grew up in Texas, is a student herself. She attends Sacramento City College and plans to attend UCD and DQU. She intends to work toward a degree in dultural anthropology with emphasis on folklore.

Jeri is married to Mel Kemp who is one-quarter Ute. Mel is a steam operating engineer at UCD physical plant. They have a 14-year-old son, Bobby.
