$ - $ DESKAIDE * THE SILENT SECRETARY * 1942 JULY 21 TUESDAY Fair & not so hot. I did German in morning & went with Mabel to Brocton [[Brockton]] Field Parkway Pond again, swam once & tanned and basked some. We started at 7:45 & got there at 1:15!! (30 min) We got back about 6:00. We stopped once on way back to paddle. I think mother will get me a new bathing suit - I hope so. On way back we went to Stoughton 5¢ and 10¢ store & between us, Mabel & I bought a 11¢ bottle of leg stocking lotion - I pd. 6.¢, she 5.¢. It is a thick, light brown fluid you rub on legs & dry - pretty - looks like stockings or sun tan - I put it on my feet tonight. - pretty - soap & water takes it off & scrating [[scratching]] mars it. I spent 6¢ - had $9.04 - have $ [[strikethrough]] 8.44¢ now [[/strikethrough]] $8.98 now [[footnote]] "Keep cool and you command everybody"-St. Just [[/footnote]] [[right page]] DESKAIDE | THE SILENT SECRETARY | 1942 JULY 22 WEDNESDAY [[margin note]] [[?]] + put it on again [[/margin note]] [[page top]] [[August 1942 calendar with 23 24 and 25 circled and 27 28 and 29 strikethrough]] [[/page top]] Fair & windy & cool. In morning I did German, went to store twice (once to see about painting Dad's little house for a surprise - gray door, yellow (house), & white finishings.) In the afternoon I went to Mabel's & we put on the leg stocking stuff to above knees from feet (toes, too) It is dark tan color & pretty. (prettier than 59¢ or $1.00 stuff - comes of [[off]] with soap & water & hard rubbing) I put a line down back of it with eyebrow pencil, - we both did. [[sketch of legs]] It looks like real stockings exactly!! We used the whole bottle up. We helped her mother clean a cabinet. (washed dishes etc.) & went to Ladies Apparel shop in Stoughton to see about a bathing suit for me. I got one just like Mabel's ($1.09 & large size)!!! Mother (who rode my bike way over to get a qt. of blueberries, etc. we had for supper, paid for it. It & Mabel's are on next page. I cut out another Jergen's coupon - have 4 now. [[footnote]] "A masterpiece is not hewn from any block of wood"—Pythagoras [[/footnote]] [[bottom margin]] We had each a plum royal icecream cone. [[/bottom margin]]
Transcription Notes:
-I am unsure of what to put when a margin note is cut off.
-I am unsure of what to put when dates on the calendar are circled.
-I am unsure of how to notate a drawing among many lines.
-There is a partial notation at top of 2nd page that I cannot read. As the first transcriptionist said, there appears to be some writing in the margins along the binding of this diary, but the is not fully opened and this cannot be read.
