MRS STARR: There's one I had this morning.

MINNIE: That's the big star.

MRS STARR: But that's not the one you're talking about? 

MINNIE: That's the one I'm talking about now. That's that big beautiful star.  That's the time those Russia planes-- And I thought they was beautiful stars and when they got close enough they turned to planes. They went to dropping bombs down on us. During that time I was in a very, very bad shape. I didn't have--  People did not understand me. And they didn't try. And--my people I'm talking about. Now the children was very nice to me. But the adults became jealous because so many of the white people would praise me and talk about it, you know, and think about what I was doing and they'd become jealous. That's all I would say it was. And I've had some of my close friends to come right back to the gate, and I sitting down with my pictures on the box, painting, and talking. And they sit right down there whole hour and a half and look at me and want to look at the pictures and they're afraid--

MRS STARR: You mean when you were on your porch?

MINNIE: That's right. Lookin--

MRS STARR: Outdoors?

MINNIE: Um-huh. I'd be outdoors, you know, in the summertime. Sitting out there painting.

MRS STARR: Did they come look at the pictures?

MINNIE: No! They won't look at them. They'll come there talk to me, and I have my easel up painting other pictures. And they come there, lots of them, and talk every kind of thing and look at me, and they
