7. WHAT MATERIAL FROM YOUR DEPARTMENT HAS BEEN TRANSMITTED TO STUDENTS AND INVESTIGATORS OUTSIDE OF THE MUSEUM DURING THE YEAR, AND IN CONNECTION WITH WHAT SPECIAL INVESTIGATION WAS THE MATERIAL NEEDED? IT SHOULD BE STATED IN EACH CASE WHETHER OR NOT THE MATERIAL HAS BEEN RETURNED TO THE MUSEUM.

Specimens of Eocene fossils of the Midway or Clayton horizon were sent to Prof. G. D. Harris of Cornell University Ithaca New York, for study in connection with a monograph which he has recently printed on the fossils of this formation. They were used and have been duly returned by him.

In this connection it seems proper to state that during the year 140 applications were received from more than 100 individuals, for information of one sort or another, including names of shells, references to literature, etc. etc. which has in each case been promptly furnished. This involved the identification of over 3000 species and the writing of over 1000 pages of correspondence by Mr. Simpson and myself without the assistance of stenographer or type writer.
