Colonel
A Gentleman came to my office this morning to employ some hands to take down in Maryland. He wished to know if he could do so without being molested & gave the following statement Viz that a man Oliver Wood by name who lives in Baltimore comes to this city & collect all the col^d. men that he can persuade to go with him under large promises. He takes these men to Baltimore & furnishes the farmers with hands charging them $5.00 & cost of transportation for each hand The farmers to save themselves deduct the amt. paid for transportation from the 1st. month's wages due the col^d. men in this way Wood clears $5.00 for each hand. This Gentleman was told that Wood was the sole agent for this district & that he prevented citizens from taking hands to the Country that they have employed in this city. An agent of this man's (Wood) is now at the Balti Depot with a lot of hands which he intends to transport to Baltimore to day. A deep game is being played if this man's statement is correct. The Gentleman is here now.

Very Respectfully &c,
Capt &c.

Dear Sir
Your note to Col Jno Eaton Jr in reference to the obtaining some good farm hands having been referred to me I have the honor to state that we can furnish the men if you or Mr Temple will call at the Freedmens Intelligence office on Saturday next He then could see the men make his own selections &c. They come to this office to get employment daily, but a greater number on Saturday than any other day. This office is on the corner of 14th & M Sts in the building formerly know as Ricord Hospital. If Mr Temple can not find it convenient to come I will send the men as desired. They Generally desire to see their employer before they go into an arrangement to work. I think he would be better satisfied if he would come & select the men
