Respy returned.
These persons referred to in the within com"n with many others gave their names to go North, & West. on my recent visit to Harpers Ferry. A sufficient number of places had already been secured in Conn. N.Y. Ohio & Illinois, to supply the whole number, but these persons declined going to any State but Ohio: and stated their preferences to go only to particular localities, where their friends were going.
These persons were informed that they could not be sent to these localities till places had been secured for them: that Special efforts would be made to get them places in the desired localities: and as soon as the places could be secured, transportation could and would be furnished and they would be sent on: Special efforts have been made, with no returns as yet but with daily expectations.

Not having been authorized to approach Mr. Ames, and having had no knowledge of his appointment through any other source, I must say I do not know. But having done much good to the colored people thr'o him and finding him in sympathy with the freedpeople of Harpers Ferry Va.
I do think he would be a very proper and fit person to be the agent of the Bureau at that place.
