Sir,

Following is an account of the progress made in this department during the month of January, 1882:

The greater part of my time has been devoted to the sorting and labeling of the miscellaneous collections of marine invertebrates, some of old and some of recent date, in proof correcting and in directing the labors of those under me. The diversified character of my work this month prevents my giving a detailed account of the statement of it, as no daily record was kept.
The alcoholic collections in the West basement have received most attention. The large numbers of small collections stored there have been assorted as rapidly as possible, and then transferred to the temporary
