storage cases in the east basement hall. It is my intention to empty the west basement invertebrate room of the great mass of miscellaneous materials it now contains, as fast as the sorting can be done, and then to inaugurate therein an entirely new arrangement, whereby the collection may be referred to more conveniently than at present. This work will, I expect, be finished in the course of two or three months. The selection of dry materials for the exhibition series now being mounted by Mr. Hawley has consumed much of my time. In addition to correcting several proof sheets on Museum time, I have catalogued, stamped, and made up into plates (46 in number) the cuts (205 in number) for Prof. A.E. Verrill's report on Cephalopods in the report of the U.S. Fish Commissioner.
