Mr. Charles Pearce was employed during the first half of the year, or from January 1 to July 1, mainly in copying and cataloguing, but he also performed some work upon the collections, and rendered efficient aid in preparing the educational series of duplicates.

Mr. R. S. Tarr, who joined the U. S. Fish Commission party at Wood's Hole during the summer of 1882, was appointed an assistant in this department October 20, and has since been very active and conscientious in the discharge of his duties. He has put up the
