Pilot in Java Talks to Wife In Arlington
The reassuring voice of her husband, co-pilot of a United States Army Flying Fortress in the Dutch East Indies. came to an Arlington (Va.) schoolteacher over 12.000 miles of telephone lines last week.
"Complete amazement" was how Mrs. Elizabeth Reinoehl McAdams, wife of Lieut. M. L. McAdams, jr., described her reaction.
She had no idea of what was coming, she said when she picked up the telephone at the home of her mother, Mrs. Frank Walter Reinoehl, at Highland, Howard County, Md., and heard her husband's voice "very clearly," from Java.
"I wanted to ask a lot of questions-what kind of a trip he had, how the weather was-but each time I realized he couldn't answer because of the necessity for secrecy. But I did find out that he was well and he sounded cheerful."
Lieut. and Mrs. McAdams were married January 2 at Newport News, Va., a few weeks before he left the country as a member of the first flying A. E. F.. to the Indies.
McAdams, 25 years old, is a native of Hagerstown, Md., and attended Johns Hopkins University at Baltimore before entering the Air Corps. Another Hagerstown native, Lieut. DuBrutz Jacques, is pilot of the same bomber of which McAdams is co-pilot.
Mrs.McAdams took post graduate work at George Washington University here last year.
