SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION Selection of the Architect for Renovation and Restoration of the Smithsonian Institution Building The Secretary reported that an appropriation of $2,054,000 has been approved by the House and has been recommended by the Senate Appropriations Committee for 1966 to renovate the central portion of the interior of the old Smithsonian Building. The work includes renovating the third floor, which is being vacated by the Department of Botany's move to the Natural History Building; installing a new fourth floor in place of the existing steel deck; installing a new elevator; renovating the heating system; installing central air-conditioning through the building; and providing essential utilities. The only exterior work contemplates restoration to its original design of the roof on the tower which had never been properly restored after a fire in 1865. The General Services Administration will supervise this work for the Smithsonian and has submitted for consideration six architects. They are as follow: Nicholas Satterlee & Associates, Washington, D. C. Clas, Riggs, Owens & Ramos, Washington, D. C. Chatelain, Gauger & Nolan, Washington, D. C. Mills, Petticord & Mills, Washington, D. C. McGaughan & Johnson Associates, Washington, D. C. On motion by Dr. Brown, seconded by Dr. Haskins, it was VOTED that the firm of Chatelain, Gauger and Nolan of Washington, D. C., be selected as the architect to prepare plans for the renovation of the Smithsonian Institution Building.
