Of the overall acreage (530 acres) to be acquired by purchase, 391 (74%) lie within approved taking lines for the George Washington Memorial Parkway, leaving 139 additional acres to be purchased for the Smithsonian project.

The Smithsonian will seek to negotiate an agreement by which the cost of land acquisition can be shared jointly between the National Park Service and the Smithsonian Institution.

In view of the Vietnamese situation, the Advisory Board recommends that we seek legislative authority to acquire land only at this time. No construction is now contemplated.

Accordingly, the following motion was adopted unanimously by the Advisory Board:
MOVED that the Advisory Board reaffirms its approval of the plans previously submitted to the Board of Regents for establishing a National Armed Forces Museum Park in the Fort Foote-Smoot Bay area of Prince Georges County, Maryland.

In view of the world situation and the current moratorium on Federal public works projects, it is recommended that the Smithsonian Institution limit its request to Congress at this time to authorization to acquire site land only. Rising land values and the threat of commercial and residential development make the early acquisition of land necessary. (Map of area appears on page .)
