SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION

private agencies that it is expected that they, together with business, magazines, foundations, trade associations, manufacturers, and photographers, would provide substantial support for the exhibition.  It is hoped that if the Vice President's interest were made known contributions would be generous.

Contributions will be sought to support the following elements of the project:

To commission a number of the best American documentary and news photographers to make new photographs for the exhibition;

To prepare an illustrated catalog of the exhibition;

To improve the quality of the photographs and installation beyond that which the Smithsonian will undertake to provide from its own resources;

To support a concurrent seminar on the subject of photographic communications and art as they relate to the contemporary needs, and

To prepare a circulating version of the exhibition to be offered by the Smithsonian Traveling Exhibition Service.

The cost to the Smithsonian to produce a creditable exhibit on "The Changing City" employing the best assortment of photographs obtainable at moderate cost and displaying them on existing reusable display panels with the available lighting fixtures is estimated to be $45,000.  The amount includes the salary of an exhibits director to be engaged full-time for ten months on the planning and production of the exhibit.

The exhibit will occupy 6,000 square which is estimated to accommodate approximately 300 photographs.  The exhibit would be scheduled to open May 1, 1968.

The Vice President commented that the documentation given above fully explained the plans of the Institution and also the exhibit on "The Changing City."  He suggested that a seminar be convened to run concurrently with the opening of the
