WORKS PRESENTED FOR ACTION BY THE SMITHSONIAN ART COMMISSION, DECEMBER 5, 1967

56. Sculpture. HANDSTAND, by Chaim Gross( 1904-     ), American, Bronze, 20-1/2 x 9 inches, 1963. Offered by the Artist, New York, New York.

Chaim Gross, noted primarily for his work in sculpture, is represented in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art and many other collections. National Collection of Fine Arts owns a pen drawing and a watercolor by the artist, but no sculpture.

57. Painting. UNTITLED, by Hans Hofmann(1880-1966), American. Oil on canvas, 35 x 32 inches, about 1949.  Offered by Mrs.Doris Kreindler, New York, New York.

Hofmann was born in Germany and came to the United States in 1931. From the early 1940's he was an influential teacher and an important member of the New York school of painting. He is represented in most major collections of American painting. The National Collection of Fine Arts received a later example of his work with the Johnson Wax Collection.

58. Sculpture.  THE COUNCIL OF WAR, by John Rogers(1829 - 1904), American. Plaster, 25 inches high, 1868. Recommended for purchase.

During his thirty-five year career(1859 - 1894), Rogers produced over eighty small plaster genre groups of which the National Collection of Fine Arts possesses nine examples.

59. Drawing.  CONEY ISLAND, by Reginald Marsh(1898-1954), American.  Chinese ink, 22 x 29 inches, 1948. Offered by Mr. Harry Spiro, New Orleans, Louisiana.

SPECIAL NOTE; The N.C.F.A. was offered a major painting by George Luks ("POLKA DOT DRESS") too late for consideration at the December meeting. As the result of a written poll of members of the Executive Committee, it was recommended that this painting be accepted for the permanent collection.
