SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States in Congress assembled, That section 2 of the Act of August 22, 1949 is amended to read as follows:

Sec. 2. Appropriations are hereby authorized for the maintenance of the Astrophysical Observatory and the making of solar observations at high altitudes; for repairs and alterations of buildings and grounds occupied by the Smithsonian Institution in the District of Columbia and elsewhere; and for preparation of manuscripts, drawings and illustrations for publications; and further, appropriations are hereby authorized to plan and construct museum support and depository facilities and these appropriations shall remain available until expended.

RADIATION BIOLOGY LABORATORY

The Secretary reported that the urgent need to relocate the Radiation Biology Laboratory from its crowded quarters in the basement of the Smithsonian Institution Building had been justified before our Appropriations Subcommittees. Funds to start relocation were appropriated in fiscal year 1968 and additional funds are requested in the fiscal year 1969 budget.

With the assistance of the General Services Administration and a private engineering consultant, we are studying the feasibility of moving the Laboratory either to a new vacant Government-owned warehouse building at the old Federal Records Center in Alexandria, Virginia, or to leased space in a privately owned laboratory building being constructed at Rockville, Maryland.

Contingent upon receiving an additional appropriation, we plan to proceed this year
