Mr Augustine
Berke (Burke) County N.C.
Sir.
Francis Bond - colored - complains that you refused to pay her for two months that she worked for you, and that when she came away you took a trunk full of clothes, and a bed from her, and that you charged her with stealing from you or rather, told her she could have her clothes when she brought back something you had missed. You are hereby requested to restore all property taken from the complainant without delay and to pay the amount of her wages. If this woman is guilty of theft you have no right to punish her, that is the business of a competent court.

William Brown - colored - states that you have retained $5.50/100 - of the order you promised to pay - for lawyers fee. This you have no right to do the order is for so many dollars and the value of the money must be paid to Brown. The amount charged is exorbitant for collecting that amount of money even if any real service had been rendered.
