My dearest Emmie,
I received your mother’s letter yes.[[yesterday]] it was ever so kind of her to write to a fellow.

It made me feel awfully cheap as I hav'nt done anything like what I ought to have. When I think of the time and money I have spent running around from one city to another I want to jump overboard and say “here goes nothing” but guess it could be wiser to brace up and do something. I have just received a letter from Winnie H. in which she told me of Maud's mishap with the horse and sleigh.

Poor Maud I am with her as I have spoiled two carpets and a white table cover and a book since I have been here.  All done with a little bottle of ink. Painted them so have not had to pay for any yet.

Hav'nt had the blues since I have been here; I suppose it is because

I have been working all the time. Have got another chromo on the stock. This time it is a girl in a gondola on the Grand Canal and is larger than the other. By the way I have a customer for the other.

In the meantime I am painting the figure with Mr. Grunis' picture; it, the picture is 9x12 feet, just measure off 9x12 in some room and you will have an idea how we felt when we saw it stuck up. The figure is life size. I have the study for it about half made.  

When I saw that canvas I wanted to fall through the floor but rather like the idea now. Well I guess that is enough for bad art and I know that half finished chromos are not interesting subjects to write about so will try and finish with some news. While G. was at work

I think "leather?" could actually be "table". You'll see in the letter, most crosses of the letter "t" come after the letter itself. I believe that cross is supposed to be for the first letter of the word.
