terrible in different parts of Europe, and hard enough here, but we are used to that - I have been here and, alone, this summer.  Mathilde was in Germany in June, and that rather upset my arrangements as everything depends on her; and now I am looking forward to a few days absence, to go to Jean Thulhers wedding, she is to be married in Geneva on the 14th and as they are away from home, and none of the family with them, it seemed a friendly thing to be there, at least one old friend amongst strangers.  Mr. Sears, the fiancé, has some relations living near Geneva, so that place was fixed on, as Paris had to be given up on account of the French law requiring six months residence - Jean has always been very friendly towards me, and I am very glad she is making a marriage which all her family are pleased with.
