which we had to tear apart and eat with our fingers in the presence of three common Italian men, who of course stared and jabbered Italian and took snuff. It was horrid, but, one need never be afraid that the Italians will be offensive, or speak, however, they may stare. They are really much nicer than the French. They could not take us in at the Pension Laurent where we drove - until the next morning - and we were somewhat dismayed, but went to a very nice hotel for one night, and hunted up Pension's in the morning as we had lots of addresses. Finally settled down here - recommended by Baedecker Huistes and Conant - was attracted by the pretty sunny room, with a big window looking on a real little Italian garden - orange trees ivy and broken statues - (plaster - Jeanne d'Arc and Dante) The salon also opens on it with big windows to the floor. 6 francs a day. It is a little
