All the papers have come about the horrible time at Johnstown. I had known about it - every one in Cambridge was talking of it and Mr Darwin read aloud to Maud and Me long detailed accounts from the English papers. I was full enough of it when I was not writing but then other things crowded it out so I did not mention it. It is simply too much to believe - I cant take it in. Strange that we had no friends in it - among such thousands it seems as if every one must know some one of the sufferers.

Mr Thouron seemed to feel so sure I would stay over and go to Brittany or
