May has gone to visit the [[Anscotts?]] at Grantham and so I am alone in my glory - but as I work nearly all day at the Darwin's and have luncheon and dinner there I really only sleep here take naps and write as now—   A moving Panorama of Punch passes continually before my window—  Punch and Thomas Hardy—  Yesterday being Market day Carrier's Carts full of people were abundant—  Green-grocers like Leech and the well-known butcher boy balancing his familiar tray and holding sweet converse with the white capped housemaids

opposite who stand down in the area looking up and holding onto the railings just as in the pictures—  My early days in Conshohocken have made me familiar with England—  The policeman too is an old friend and Leech has got his gait outline and expression exactly—  The women are almost never so good in outline as du Maurier makes them as they wear hunchy bustles and their dresses always hang badly but the little girls from 14 to 16 are lovely - dressed with the greatest freedom and simplicity and at that age always holding themselves well—

The Goodharts have gone and are very well pleased with their portrait as their note shows—  Mr G calls it a puny sum 15 guineas - they made it guineas - I only asked pounds - so that the amount is about $78- but I know that if
