I have heard nothing about the portrait in Buffalo, (I only wish that in its place I might put a painting I made three weeks ago.)  It is in some ways good and many bad.  The hands are not finished.  You know it was to hurried to be a finished polished thing.  I should hate to look at it myself, I have here a very poor photo of it.  Which has made the grey yellowish dress look to white and has robbed it of its modeling.  I hoped they varnished it.  Coffin wrote me saying he would.

My work now is a hundred times better.  Always when painting I think of "Vary-your values and simply color."  Sargent.  Don't paint to rapidly.  God bless Sargent for his kindness and instructions.  I have written his work in the various [[?cafe]].

I am now attending another school.  The school of Delacrose [[?Delacroix]].  I made the change for three reasons.  First, Collin has left for the summer.  Second.  [[?Collorossi]] does not pay enough for his models, so the students are compelled to work from inferior types.  Thirdly all the other professors could learn a few things regarding big details from me.  And until I hear that Collin has returned in October I shall not go back.  My criticism in the new school was given by an white haired man.  Who said my work was interesting in style.  And that the other men should note the manner of reflecting lights as I had set them down.  This school is a clean one.  A trifle more aristocratic.  When Bob comes over I hope to show him some good work.  He will be here in two weeks time.

Collin has promised to overlook my work next winter.  So I am well fixed.  I have arranged everything regarding - a picker
