The Chamberlains' afternoon was a swell affair. The room was crowded and close. I met some people that were interesting. I am to paint Mrs. C-'s sisters portrait starting Sunday- She is to wear a red gown and the Chamberlains are most keen as to the little arrangements. I shall paint at the Chamberlains. The singing this afternoon was of a high order. Mrs. C.- has many musical friends. The company was rather mixed - but from it's number I have received two invitations for tea. A Douglas Stadan Esqr- invited me for tomorrow. He is a big man, belongs to three clubs and seems to know many - members of society. I met through him - a Mrs. Lorimer - authoress - shall see her again tomorrow.  Mrs - Fairbanks whom I met in New York has sent me an invitation to attend a tea at her home to meet her husband &c &c &c. This gadding about takes up some valuable time. But I'm inclined to think it pay's-
