My dear Mother,
I have finished my old man subject in my ideal strong and vigorous way. It is realistic - and at the same time broad - I am now starting again my most interesting study of the old man with model. I painted him so faithfully that it looked more like an [[strikethrough]] among immage [[/strikethrough]] image than a living man, and so my patience is being trained by my starting it over again. Art is strange. I think artists, like mothers find something of more interest in their latest production I know it is so with painters always the last is the best until another idea is maturing
I can easily send something to London, and to the Salon.
I feel sure of the Salon but doubt my success in the Academy
