car carried us straight up the steep hill-side and through a tunnel and there we were. A magnificent valley with a silver thread of a river running through it, stretched to one side and bay and, in front and on the other side were range upon range of mountains. Real mountains this time - most of them covered with snow, at this season. The highest in our vicinity is Pilatus [[blank space]] ft. high. The mountain sides are covered with flowers clovers, daisies, butter-cups, and forget-me-nots, and many blossoms which we do not have. There is a great deal of music here, in the open air. Our favorite orchestra is an Italian string octet in a great Concert Garden-Cafe near here. Their troubador costume is picturesque, and their passionate Italian music and songs are fascinating. Everywhere we go we say continually "Oh wouldn't mother love this view"- or "Wouldn't this music exactly suit Father." The one regret we have in our visit is that you are not seeing it all too. I think that this is enough of a birthday present - but as I said I may succumb to the charm of an edelweiss pendant. I thank you very much for the thought.
