have had, had I stayed there the night before, had been given to somebody else, & the only room I could have was in a [[farm?]] college, half of which was a most filthy stall with 5 cows. I declined, altho the landlady said an English clergyman had just been there a month, & this woman standing by said they had rooms in the same house & rather liked the smell of the cows. So I came to the Union Hotel.

Lucerne itself is not attractive. It is one mass of hotels & summer visitors; but the lake, surrounded by the high mountains is very wonderful.
